Welcome to Northern Activities
an enthusiastic group who love making traditional
or contemporary crafts for fun
Northern Activities started life as Krafts&leisures in 2018.
Our craft group was initially part of a large organisation, which then closed due to the pandemic and didn’t reopen. Once things returned to normal, I was encouraged to start again in a new community venue and new name…. NORTHERN ACTIVITIES which has continued to flourish ever since. Most members live in Crowle, North Lincolnshire or in rural areas around the historic Isle of Axholme. Although, a diverse membership, what we do have in common is a passion for crafting and the togetherness it brings whether through learning how to make an articulated teddy, or going for an afternoon tea social.
When it comes to keeping your hands or mind active and alert, NORTHERN ACTIVITIES has a schedule of events to choose from and we are always on the lookout for exciting new twists on old topics.
We are an enthusiastic group who love making traditional or contemporary crafts for fun. If they end up as a gift or sale item, that is a bonus.
Two hours most Monday mornings have helped develop a shared interest and a widening of skills and knowledge to unlock that creative reserve. From eye catching Rustic Posey Jars to attractive 3D pictures, there is always someone willing to share inspirational ideas either from a group member or a guest crafter. When weather predictions are good, we also like to make use of members’ gardens or plan an interesting visit
OUR ETHOS
Northern activities not only turns a curiosity into a hobby or leisure activity, but also promotes a sense of wellbeing, mental alertness and reduces isolation. The time we share together also allows us to reflect on nature, self and our environment. Some might call this chatting or putting the world to rights. Either way we like to think there is something to suit all ages and levels, starting from absolute beginner or returnee.
If you are interested in joining us one Monday morning, get in contact for a taster session
OUR EVENTS
At the beginning of any hobby, equipment can be expensive especially if it is only a one-off use but with NORTHERN ACTIVITIES there is always someone who has the die cutter or special tool who will show you how to use them or even prepare cut-outs ready to use for a crafting demonstration. Occasionally members have volunteered to hold the demonstration in their home. Everyone can bring a sharing dish to make it a social event as much as a learning experience.
Teddies
Making memory teddies or keepsakes from a late loved one’s clothing is a way of preserving their memory and a resourceful way of saving fabric from the scrap bag.
The Queen’s Jubilee
One example of a social event with a theme is the queen’s jubilee in the summer of 2022. Dressed in 1950s clothes we celebrated in the garden of one of our members.. Cake, coronation chicken and plenty of tea or fizz. Music was provided by the Crafty Strummers Ukulele group.
Rustic Posies
A lovely nature theme where we mixed a variety of artificial flowers to create a rustic posy. They can be evocative of summer or an autumn garden in a pot or a vase. For a small fee this workshop was provided by one of our visiting demonstrators from Dadesley Crafting who supplied the materials and knowhow.
3D
Simple but effective use of paints, shells etc on an acrylic frame providing an amusing under water scene. It was demonstrated by one of our own members. Recently retired and with time on her hands she was more than willing to share skills from her previous job. Many of the ideas are not only fun to make but can be transferred to other projects. So crafting is one activity where hoarding is actively encouraged. You will never know when that button or feather will come in useful.
Pebble Gallery
More examples of pictures made from items we take for granted. Small stones, sticks and pebbles can be turned in a picture for the wall or a Valentine memento. The themes are as broad and as wide as the imagination.
Hand Made Cards
If you ever need cards for birthdays, christmas or anniversaries or a tag for that gift – handmade ones say that certain something ‘I care, and I want to go that extra mile’.
PAST WORKS
At Northern Activities we all share and bring everyone together!
